Cannabis has marked effect on psychology and physiology of the person using it. People usually take cannabis either in the form of smoking or eat its seeds or leaves in some form or the other.
Main active chemical component of cannabis is Tetra hydrocannabinol (THC). It ha seen studied extensively in the last five decades or so. Finding suggests that a minimum of 10 mille gram of this substance is needed to have any marked effect on the body.
Though THC has been found as the main component, but cannabis is a mix of more than 300 chemicals. Any of these chemicals can become active depending upon circumstances. Uncertainty and unpredictability of the behavior of the components of cannabis makes it unique.
It has been found that that when cannabis is smoked it show its effect very quickly. When it is eaten it takes time of one to two hours to show effects. Main effects of cannabis are
- Relaxation
- Euphoria
- Changes in Perception
These effects vary in a significant way with the amount of dose. At low doses there is mild increase in the sensitivity of the senses. At higher doses visual impairment becomes more prominent. Sense of time is affected, Memory span and attention span are distinctly affected.
Physiological symptoms include
- Dry mouth
- Racing heart
- Respiratory trouble
- confusion
Medical studies have mostly focused on the mind, respiration, heart and behavioral aspect of a person.
Mental
After taking cannabis some people become inconvenient in certain situations and are apprehensive of others. Their behavior show marked behavioral changes.
As the use of Cannabis induces visual distortions and marked difference in various faculties of the mind. Its long term uses has the potential for stroke or other mental disorders. Various scientific studies suggest possibility of mental disorders or diseases.
Respiratory
Various studies suggest cannabis smoke contain different carcinogens. These carcinogens can lead to various forms of lung cancer or other respiratory diseases. Till date there is no positive evidence for these correlations.
Heart attack
Because use of Cannabis increases the heart rate, it has the potential of affecting the heart. Its long term use may lead to heart problem but it has not been confirmed by any of scientific investigations.
Some people worry about the toxic effects of Cannabis. Scientists have found that the amount that body allows to enter in the system does not have the potential to kill a person. It has been found that man can die only if is injected THC intravenously.
Addiction is another issue that is debatable among political and social circles. Research shows addiction threat posed by the cannabis is much less in comparison to that posed by alcohol, tobacco and drugs like heroin and cocaine.
Besides derogatory effects it has been found that cannabis has many medicinal properties and can cure many problems of the human body. It has been found that it increase food intake. Enjoyment of food is also increases. Certain studies suggest cannabis is helpful in the treatment of mental disorders.
It seems debate for and against the use of cannabis will go on till we find some conclusive answers to the hazards posed by this wonder substance to human body.
