In continental structure of residential and other buildings fireplaces were an indispensable feature. Fireplace can ordinarily be visualized as an architectural element with space to contain fire.  Fireplace can be indoor or outdoor though the former is the traditional pattern.

Fireplaces, the traditional concept

There was a time when the fireplaces meant chimneys and wood sticks burning in the fireplace giving out smoke and charcoal.  The concept has undergone a sea change to day.  Fireplaces are no more confined to wood and fire but to day there are gas fires and smokeless fires are used in the fireplaces shelving the smoke and charcoal as the by products.

Ordinarily the fireplaces are used to provide warmth in cool climates. But there are other uses too.  The fireplaces could be used for outdoor cooking, and also for decorative purposes. In the cooler countries the fireplaces are traditional features. The exotic sensation of having direct heat to your body is highly enjoyable.  Moreover the traditional wood fireplaces give you a mesmeric view of flickering leaps of flames that may not be available when you use gas or electric fires. Fireplace mantels are the best piece of decorative article one could have and it provides the architect with the opportunities to create unique interior decorations.

Fireplaces uses

Very often you will find that people have gathered around the fireplaces for discussion and meetings.  This is more visible in a family where the family bonding is strengthened around the fireplace.  The family gathering at the evening before all go to sleep is cherished by most people as it brings them physically and mentally nearer to the kiths and kin. The famous tradition followed in USA during the period of Great depressions was adequately represented in the radio broadcasts made by the then President Franklin Roosevelt.

You may also have heard about fire suites that provide you the opportunities to use the fireplaces without any hazards of external affects like wall burning or blackening of the spaces etc. They are neither very expensive nor require huge spaces, and yet they are extremely useful for the purpose of providing heat and depicting decorations.

Fireplaces – the changing trend

The present trend is that of smokeless fireplaces.  That is why in most places, the coal, wood, or peat fires are now replaced with gas or electric fires. They are not only cleaner but are also safer compared to the traditional fireplaces. Even the authorities are now appreciating the necessity of doing away with smoking apparatus that enhances carbon monoxide in the atmosphere and have therefore banned the solid fuel burning fireplaces on the basis of air pollution concerns.

In recent years the vent less fireplaces has become quite popular.  No chimney or hearth is required for such fireplaces but can add the ambiance of fireplaces in any of your rooms and produce a considerable amount of heat even in the coolest climates.

The choice is yours but you require the best provider to procure the fireplace of your choice. A good provider can take stock of your requirements basing on the shape and size of your house and rooms where you intend to install the fireplace and provide you the exact solution for the purpose.
